Today I had to go to buy more lunch tickets. I buy booklets of 20 at time.
In order to get lunch tickets here, it is a bit of an ordeal. You can’t just order their lunches through the school. No, you need to go to the municipio (town hall) and buy lunch tickets through the questura (police department) from the polizia municipio (municipal police). Of course.
I also had to pay attention to the hours that they were open. The offices were closed a few days a week and generally only open in the mornings.
And of course there is paperwork to go along with it. Each time I go, I have to fill out a form with the boy’s names and information. Then I am asked if I want lunch tickets for the middle school or the elementary school. I want the elementary lunch tickets. They are yellow whereas the middle school lunch tickets are green. The irony in all of this is that the two schools are one in the same, in the same building and use the same cafeteria. But whatever.
Then the nice but solemn police officer goes and gets the booklet of tickets – generally somewhere down the hall, and must individually stamp each one. A time consuming process to be sure. I wonder if Italian office officials get carpal tunnel from stamping so much? Then he must further stamp my three-copy receipt and sign it. I pay, get my copy of the receipt and leave. It is about a 15 minute procedure if there is no line and waiting time.
After all this, I have to write each boy’s name on the back of each ticket and then the date that they are using them. It’s all about the paperwork here.
